The Monterey Peninsula draws international and national tourists, as well as the weekend travelers from around the state—and shopping here has never been more fun. Unique shops range from upscale jewelry and art to bargain-priced outlet and consignment stores.
Carmel shopping districts include The Crossroads Shopping Village and the Barnyard; both are across Highway One from Carmel-by-the-Sea, at the entrance to Carmel Valley. In downtown Carmel, dozens of boutique shops, plus the Carmel Plaza, make this an excellent location for finding one-of-a-kind items in home and garden furnishings, fashion, art, and gifts.
Regional and national shopping outlets are found at Del Monte Center in Monterey. Downtown Pacific Grove and Monterey offer a wide variety of shops featuring designer footwear, resort clothing and sports apparel.
While the economy has slowed spending everywhere, local retail sales are still strong in Monterey County. According to the California Travel and Tourism Commission, tourists spend $2 billion a year in Monterey County, creating 22,900 jobs and generating $54 million in local tax receipts.
