Government

The Monterey Peninsula is made up of seven cities and several unincorporated communities. Residents of Carmel-by-the-Sea, Del Rey Oaks, Sand City, Marina, Seaside, Monterey and Pacific Grove elect city council members to serve on their respective governing boards. The unincorporated communities of Pebble Beach, Carmel Valley and Big Sur fall under the jurisdiction of Monterey County, which is governed by a five-member board of supervisors. The Monterey peninsula’s elected representatives include U.S. Congressman Sam Farr, who represents California’s 17th district in the U.S. House of Representatives. California State Senator Abel Maldonado represents the 15th Senatorial District. California Assemblyman John Lair represents the 27th Assembly District.
